Iran has proposed to integrate its bankcard systems with Georgia’s in a move to boost tourism revenues for the two countries.

The proposal was made by Iran’s Minister of Economic and Finance Affairs Masoud Karbasian in a meeting with the visiting members of the Georgian parliament.

“The groundwork for banking cooperation between the two countries will be established in a way that would allow the use of bankcards of Iran and Georgia by the people in each other’s countries,” Karbasian was quoted as saying.

Last December, it was announced here that Iran and Russia were in the test process to integrate their banking payment systems.

“There will be normal debit cards which can be used by the customers abroad,” said Davood Mohammad Beigi, director of the Payment System Department of the Central Bank of Iran.

The process of building infrastructure for integration with international payment systems will take at least 10 months, he added.
