St.Kitts and Nevis’ Prime Minister Denzil Douglas says the installment of the new US$3 million Border Managements System (BMS) at the nation’s airports now brings the country in line with Internationally accepted security standards.
Prime Minister Douglas, who recently toured Robert L Bradshaw International Airport to observe the BMS operation, said that as St.Kitts and Nevis becomes a part of the international community (technologically speaking) he wants to ensure his country’s border security is up to par with the rest of the world.
The prime minister, who is also minister of tourism, declared that he also wants to ensure that immigration personnel and other national security officers have the ability to access vital information on persons coming into the country.
“Information is now accessed from data base of the Interpol Network as a guide to identify persons who are coming into the country and who ought not to based on credible information provided by international agencies,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
He said the Border Management Security System also improves services to persons needing visas to enter St.Kitts and Nevis. Under the high tech system visitors can also apply for visas online and get the necessary approval before entering the federation.
Describing the investment as important, PM Douglas noted the signing of the visa waiver agreement between St.Kitts and Nevis and several nations of the European Union.
The new system is installed at the Robert L Bradshaw International Airport in St.Kitts, the Vance Amory Airport in Nevis and the Passport Offices in both Basseterre (St.Kitts) and Charlestown (Nevis).
The installation of the BMS in St.Kitts and Nevis comes at a time when the destination is poised this winter to receive additional service from Atlanta on Delta later this month and from British Airways in March of next year.
The popular tourist destination the fastest growing hub in the Eastern Caribbean is currently served by daily flights on American Airlines from Miami, twice weekly from new York’s John F. Kennedy International on American Airlines and weekly from South Carolina on US Airways and via Atlanta on Delta.
