SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – The Ministry of Tourism of El Salvador (MITUR), through the Salvadoran Tourism Corporation (CORSATUR), this morning signed the donation certificate for technical equipment received from the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AECID) for the seven countries in the Central American isthmus.

In his capacity as President Pro Tempore of the Central American Tourism Council (CCT), Minister of Tourism Ruben Rochi said the equipment would be an indispensable tool for mapping the country’s tourism offerings. “Our main goal is to be able to count on a modern tool that is capable of creating, editing and updating our tourism information, in order to have a better knowledge of what’s really out there and of the tourism offerings of the various countries in our region,” he said.

The donation is an important one, as it provides tools for monitoring the country’s tourism offerings and for planning the development of the region’s tourism industry and will assist in gauging the viability of new tourism projects based on a destination’s basic infrastructure, risk areas and communication channels, among other factors.

For his part, the Spanish Ambassador to El Salvador, Jose Javier Gomez-Llera, noted that tourism is a very important activity for the development of countries in the Central American region, since their natural resources, history and culture offer enormous [tourism] potential. “By providing this important computer equipment through this program, we are contributing to strengthening [the region’s] tourism institutions, with the goal of developing greater and better capabilities for managing tourism in the region,” said the diplomat.

This design, regional implementation, dissemination of information and international promotion tools will also be very useful in planning and managing the various regional destinations and is expected to be used to produce and publish regional maps as of December of this year.

The equipment received includes computers, large format printers, notebook PCs with satellite connection capabilities, storage devices and geographical information management software. The total value of the equipment donated is US$107,950.
